Blij stond hij op en liep naar de gang. ‘Ze liggen boven op de lege kamer, daar kan je ook strijken, ik heb de verwarming al aangezet want ik wil niet dat je kou lijdt.’ Terwijl hij dat zei liep hij door naar boven, ik achter hem aan.
Nou, ik wist niet wat me overkwam, hij had inderdaad de broeken al klaar gelegd. Het was echt een hele stapel, vreselijk. Ik pakte een broek op en zag meteen dat die versleten was. ‘Ik zal mijn best doen,’ begon ik voorzichtig, ‘maar erg best zien ze niet meer uit.’
‘Kijk maar,’ zei hij gelaten, ‘als het niet lukt moet je ze maar weggooien, maar alleen als het echt nodig is.’
Ik knikte, klapte de strijkplank open en zette het strijkijzer aan. Joris bleef even staan en keek weer naar die broeken. ‘Ik ben blij dat je het voor me doen wilt. Als er iets is hoor ik het wel, ook als je moe wordt, dan kom je maar even naar beneden om uit te rusten.’
Ik heb mijn best gedaan om er iets van te maken, maar er was geen beginnen aan. Er waren erbij die zo erg gekreukt waren dat het onmogelijk was om er wat van te maken. Na een half uur hield ik het wel voor gezien en ben met die broeken in mijn handen naar beneden gelopen.
Joris zat aan tafel de krant te lezen en keek verbaasd op toen hij me zag. ‘En, ben je al klaar?’ vroeg hij verbaasd. Ik schudde mijn hoofd en liet hem de broeken zien. ‘Ze zijn zo erg verkreukt dat er geen beginnen meer aan is.’
Hij keek naar die broeken en weer naar mij. ‘Misschien heb je wel gelijk, ik zal ze weggooien, of weet je wat, doe jij dat maar, jij weet vast wel waar. Misschien moet ik dan toch maar nieuwe kopen.’
Ik knikte: ‘Ik gooi die oude wel weg en als ik je kan helpen zeg je het maar.’
Hij lachte blij: ‘Daar zal ik aan denken.’
Opgelucht ben ik aan mijn werk begonnen.
Trouwens nog even dit, van de week maakte ik op mijn andere werk weer eens iets leuks mee.
Zondagavond, zo rond een uur of acht kwam een oudere man naar binnen. Hij keek even rond en knikte vriendelijk. ‘Ik vind dit een hele dure zaak, het eten bedoel ik dan.’ Ik knikte maar wat, wist ook niks te zeggen, maar dat hoefde niet want hij ging verder. ‘Het is dat ik ben uitgenodigd ander zat ik hier nu niet. Ik ga nooit uit eten, ik vind dat geldverspilling. Mijn vrouw kookt altijd en is net als ik ook heel zuinig. Soms klaagt ze weleens, maar daar trek ik me niks van aan. Ze krijgt iedere week huishoudgeld.’
Ik keek naar die man en vroeg me af waarom hij me dat vertelde. Schijnbaar zag hij aan mijn gezicht dat ik verbaasd was.
‘Ik weet dat ik ouderwets ben, maar ik vind dat je een vrouw niet teveel geld moet geven, dan kopen ze ook geen onbenullige dingen. Ze krijgt 30 euro per week en dat vindt ze te weinig, maar ik niet. Daar kan ze, als ze goed oplet best van rondkomen.’
Ik dacht bij mezelf, dit bestaat niet: 30 euro per week! Nou, als je dat lukt verdien je een medaille!
‘Misschien,’ begon ik heel voorzichtig, ‘is het inderdaad weinig,’
Nou, dat had ik beter niet kunnen zeggen. Ik zag dat hij kwaad werd. ‘Mijn moeder kreeg vroeger 30 gulden en daar kon ze goed van leven, dus moet mijn vrouw dat ook kunnen. Per slot van rekening krijgt ze euro’s en die zijn ook nogeens meer waard! Kwaad draaide hij zich om en liep naar buiten!
