Zondag was het niet druk, daarom mocht ik van de baas vroeger naar huis. Het was een uur of negen toen ik naar binnen liep en het eerste dat me opviel was dat Wim niet thuis was. Ik was echt verbaasd, heb nog boven gekeken, maar daar was hij ook niet. En omdat ik de auto mee had kon ik me niet voorstellen dat hij écht ver weg zou zijn. Die man is normaal gesproken niet de deur uit te krijgen. Die zit op de bank en blijft daar zitten, dus ben ik naar buiten gelopen om te kijken of de fiets in de schuur stond, en die stond er gewoon.
Nou, ik wist echt niet wat ik denken moest, ik kon ook niet bedenken waar hij zou kunnen zijn. Dus ben ik hem eerst gaan bellen, maar- en dat had ik wel kunnen raden- zijn telefoon stond uit, dus dat schoot ook niet op en Jeroen wilde ik niet meteen ongerust maken. Ik dacht wacht maar af, meer kon ik sowieso niet.
Rond de klok van elf hoorde ik de voordeur open en dichtgaan. Toen hij de kamer inliep en mij op de bank zag zitten schrok hij, dat zag ik aan zijn gezicht. ‘Wat doe jij hier?’zei hij, ‘hoef je niet te werken?’
‘Nee,’ zei ik, ‘ik mocht vroeg naar huis, maar waar was jij?’
Hij wachtte heel even, ging op een stoel zitten en zei: ‘Ik had behoefte aan frisse lucht, dus ben ik een stukje gaan lopen.’
Ik weet het niet, maar een ding is zeker, ik zag dat hij zat te liegen, maar liet niks merken. Het enige dat ik nog zei was: ‘Leuk, is goed voor je,’ of zoiets. Hij knikte blij en zette de tv aan, verder niks meer. Ik weet echt niet wat ik daarvan denken moet. Op de een of andere manier laat het me niet los. Er klopt iets niet, maar wat weet ik niet. Ik weet ook niet of hij vaker weggaat als ik werken ben. Dat zou zomaar kunnen. Straks moet ik weer weg en dan? Het zou natuurlijk mooi zijn als ik weer vroeg klaar was, maar dat zal wel niet gebeuren.
Trouwens iets heel anders. Afgelopen zaterdag heb ik iets leuks meegemaakt. Zo rond een uur of negen kwam een oudere vrouw naar binnen. Ze liep door naar de wc en vlak bij de deur draaide ze zich ineens om en liep naar me toe. ‘Mag ik u iets vragen?’ begon ze. Ik dacht, ja hoor, heb ik weer, maar ik liet niets merken, knikte enkel en zei : ‘Natuurlijk, kan ik iets voor u doen?’
‘Nee, ik wil enkel iets vragen, het is zo dat ik sinds kort een nieuwe man heb en daar ben ik heel blij mee. Hij is heel lief, maar hij doet niks.’
Ik keek haar verbaasd aan: ‘Hoezo, doet hij niks? Werkt hij niet, of wat?’
‘Nee,’ zei ze lachend: ‘Dat bedoel ik niet, werken doet hij allang niet meer, hij is met pensioen. Het is dat hij in bed niks doet, begrijpt u?’
‘Ja,’ zei ik, ‘ik denk het wel, maar daar kunt u beter met hem zelf over praten, dat zijn mijn zaken niet.’
‘Ja, dat weet ik,’ ging ze verder, ‘hij wil wel, maar niet voordat we getrouwd zijn. Eerst heb ik gezegd dat ik dat niet wil, maar dat was om hem te foppen. Ik wil wel met hem trouwen, daarom ben ik nu ook hier. Ik wilde hem hier in het restaurant ten huwelijk vragen, dat lijkt me zo romantisch.’
Ik knikte en zei dat ik het inderdaad een leuk idee was, of zoiets, precies weet ik het niet meer.
‘Ziet u,’ ging ze verder, ‘ dat is fijn, maar in het restaurant zitten me nu teveel mensen daarom ben ik eigenlijk hier. Ik zou het fijn vinden als ik het hier kon doen. Tenminste als u het goed vindt.’
Even dacht ik dat ze een grapje maakte, maar toen merkte ik dat ze bloedserieus was. ‘Hoe, had u dat gedacht? Moet ik weggaan, of zo?’
‘Ja,’ zei ze, ‘dat zou wel fijn zijn. Ik wil met hem alleen zijn.’ Ze keek me smekend aan en straalde alsof ze het ei van Columbus had ontdekt.
Ik zag het al helemaal voor me, zij hier op de knieën en hij stralend tegenover haar blij knikkend en dan van vreugde, nadat hij JA had gezegd, een potje gaan zitten janken!
‘Nou,’ begon ik heel voorzichtig, ‘ik kan en mag hier niet weg. Maar u kunt hem toch ook ergens anders ten huwelijk vragen, dat hoeft toch niet hier, op het toilet. Er zijn plekken genoeg, romantische plekken, denk er maar eens over na.’
Teleurgesteld knikte ze: ‘Ik had zo gehoopt dat ik het hier mocht doen, maar ik zoek wel verder. Bedankt voor de moeite.’
Even later was ze verdwenen. Echt waar, soms valt me niks meer in. Welk normaal mens komt nu op het idee om iemand op de wc ten huwelijk te vragen? Dat verzint geen hond!!
