Gisteren weer bij Joris geweest en nadat we koffie gedronken hadden vroeg hij of ik zin had om met hem naar de stad te gaan. Verbaasd keek ik hem aan en dacht aan het werk wat ik moest doen. ‘Wanneer? Vroeg ik dan ook.’
‘Zometeen, ik heb nog eens nagedacht en ik denk dat het toch nodig is als ik een paar nieuwe broeken koop. Dus, als je zin hebt kunnen we zometeen gaan.’
Ik aarzelde even en keek om me heen: ‘Dat wil ik best wel doen, maar ik moet hier van alles doen.’ Hij zag me kijken: ‘Het werk loopt niet weg, ga nu maar met me mee.’ Hij stond op en liep naar de gang om zijn jas te pakken. ‘Goed,’ zei ik, ‘maar dan loop ik eerst even naar boven om te kijken wat voor maat je hebt, dat is een stuk makkelijker.’
Nou, het was nogal wat. De eerste winkel die we binnen liepen was C&A. Ik voorop, Joris achter me aan. Ik keek of er iets in de aanbieding was, iets leuks, niet van die opabroeken die hij in de kast heeft hangen. Ik dacht aan een leuke jeans en die zocht ik dus ook, maar dat wilde hij niet. ‘Ik ga niet in een spijkerbroek lopen,’ zei hij ‘dat wil ik niet, daar ben ik veel te oud voor, zoek maar een nette broek uit, maakt niet uit wat die kost.’
Dus ik kijken of er iets bij hing wat hem beviel, maar alle broeken die ik uit het rek haalde vond hij niet goed. Dus, stelde ik voor om ergens anders te gaan kijken. Dat vond hij een goed idee. Nou, we hebben zo ongeveer alle winkels gehad en uiteindelijk slaagden we in een hele dure zaak. Ik zag het al voordat we naar binnen liepen. De etalage hing vol met dure merkkleding. Dat zei ik dus ook. ‘Dit is een dure zaak, ik weet niet of het verstandig is om…’
Verder kwam ik niet want mijnheer wilde daar perse naar binnen. En het ging precies zoals ik dacht. Personeel dat al in je nek staat te hijgen voordat je de deur hebt kunnen dichtmaken.
Maar Joris vond het helemaal geweldig. Ik zag het aan zijn gezicht. Hij keek nog niet eens naar de prijskaartjes, het interesseerde hem écht niet. Het enige dat hij belangrijk vond was of ik ze mooi vond. Uiteindelijk heeft hij er drie gekocht en moest hij iets van 375 euro betalen!
Toen we buiten waren vroeg hij ook meteen of ik écht mooi vond. Ik knikte en stelde voor om ergens koffie te gaan drinken.
Nadat we een leuk zaakje hadden gevonden en wat besteld begon ik er over. ‘Joris,’ begon ik heel subtiel, ‘ik vind de broeken die je gekocht hebt heel erg mooi, maar ook vreselijk duur.’
Hij lachte: ‘Dat maakt me niks uit, ik koop maar eens in de zoveel jaar iets nieuws, ze zitten goed en daar gaat het om.’ Ja, toen was ik uitgeluld. Ik dacht alleen maar aan het geld, maar goed, dat is mijn zorg niet.
Na afloop zijn we naar zijn huis gegaan en heb ik de broeken keurig netjes in de kast gehangen. Hij heeft me wel tien keer bedankt. ‘Margriet,’ zei hij de hele tijd, ‘ik ben blij dat je me er toe hebt aangezet iets nieuws te kopen, nu voel ik me weer een echte heer.’ Hij was écht blij.
Maar even iets anders, over mijn andere werk. Afgelopen zondag kwam er een vrouw naar binnen. Ze was al iets ouder en erg nerveus, dat zag ik. Ze keek om zich heen en naar mij. En net toen ik wilde vragen of ik haar ergens mee kon helpen zei ze: ‘Mag ik u iets vragen?’
Ik knikte: ‘Natuurlijk,’ zei ik, ‘gaat uw gang.’
Ze deed een paar passen naar voren en zei: ‘Ik wil gewoon een praatje maken omdat ik blij ben dat ik een avondje uit ben. Ik ben hier samen met een goede kennis. Ze had me uitgenodigd omdat ze jarig is en weet dat ik heel ongelukkig ben.’
Ik schrok en keek haar verbaasd aan. Ze zag het, deed een stapje naar voren en ging verder.
‘Het is zo, mijn man praat niet meer met mij. Helemaal niet meer.’
‘Dat is niet leuk,’ zei ik. ‘Maar, waarom dan, is er iets gebeurd?’
‘We hebben voor een poos terug ruzie gehad, ik was heel erg kwaad op hem omdat hij altijd als er iets leuks op tv is erdoorheen zit te kletsen. Toen ik vroeg of hij even zijn mond wilde houden, zei hij niks meer, geen stom woord meer en dat is al een paar maanden geleden. Ik vind het vreselijk. Ik heb er alles voor over om het goed te maken, Weet u misschien iets? Iets waardoor hij weer met me praat?’
‘Misschien moet u hem eens goed verwennen? Daar zijn mannen nogal gevoelig voor,’ stelde ik lachend voor. Ze schudde haar hoofd. ‘Heb ik al geprobeerd, ik heb écht alles geprobeerd, op een ding na, dat valt me nu in en dat ga ik straks doen. Als dat niet helpt, weet ik het ook niet meer.’
‘En dat is?’ Vroeg ik nieuwsgierig.
‘Een scheet in zijn gezicht laten,’ zei ze lachend, ‘Dat ga ik straks doen!’
Ik zag het al helemaal voor me, zo in de trant van: ZAL IK JOU EENS LEKKER IN JE BEK SCHIJTEN? Maar, dan zegt hij waarschijnlijk nog niks. Is ook lastig met volle mond praten!
